How long should a business plan be?

A business plan can range from one sheet of A4 through to hundreds of pages, however for a typical start-up I expect to see plans of between 15 to 25 pages. This is broadly divided equally between the “words” and the “numbers” insofar as content is concerned.

The key for any business plan is to ensure that you can get your point across fully and clearly, whilst not overwhelming the reader with superfluous detail.

There is no standard format for a business plan; however I’d suggest that you choose a common font in a readable size so that it can be viewed on both Mac’s and PC’s. I would also steer clear of using too many different fonts, colours and sizes. They say “a picture is worth a thousand words”, and for a business which is reliant on a visual experience (say retail, or product businesses), a well placed visual can often communicate your ideas far better than text ever could.
